Maiko Kaisho Promenade is a 317-meter long circular walkway located within the Kobe-side structure of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. Positioned approximately 47m above the sea surface, the walkway extends about 150m out from the land toward the ocean. Opened on April 5, 1998, this facility offers a rare opportunity to experience the world-class Akashi Kaikyo Bridge up close. On clear days, visitors can enjoy a sweeping panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea, Awaji Island, and even the Osaka Bay area.
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure connecting Honshu and Shikoku. Interestingly, due to the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the ground shifted during construction, resulting in the bridge being 1 meter longer than originally planned. The Maiko Kaisho Promenade serves as an educational tool to showcase the engineering marvel and history of this massive structure. The facility includes exhibits explaining the bridge's construction and the technical background that led to its completion.
The greatest draw is the sense of openness and height at 47m above the water. The glass-bottomed section provides a thrilling way to look directly down at the waves and passing ships in the Akashi Strait. There is also an observation lounge where you can look up at the massive main towers (approx. 300m high) and enjoy the scenery. With various displays and camera systems to help you understand the bridge's structure, the experience is both visually stunning and educational.
The promenade offers different charms depending on the season. Summer and spring feature beautiful contrasts between the blue sky and sea, autumn brings warmer tones to the landscape, and winter features striking yellow illuminations. The nighttime view is particularly spectacular; the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge cables are illuminated with different colors depending on the season and day of the week. On weekdays, the lights stay on until 23:00, and on weekends/holidays, they stay on until 24:00. Special light patterns are also displayed on the hour and half-hour.
Beyond just sightseeing, the facility offers immersive experiences. For thrill-seekers, the area near the water level provides a sense of intense scale. In the observation lounge, you can use the camera system to feel as though you are ascending the 300m main tower. These unique features allow visitors to feel the sheer scale of the world's largest suspension bridge. You can also enjoy a relaxing stroll while feeling the sea breeze.
Within Maiko Park, you can find several historical and cultural sites. These include the "Old Kinoshita Family Residence," a modern Japanese-style house completed in 1941, and the "Old Muto Yamaji Residence" from the Meiji era, both of which are registered tangible cultural properties. The "Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall" and the "Bridge Science Museum," which features technical displays about bridge engineering, are also nearby, allowing for a deep dive into both history and science.
Because the promenade is 47m above the sea, it can be quite windy. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and avoiding anything that might be easily blown around. Since there are glass floor sections, wear stable, comfortable walking shoes rather than high heels. Payments can be made via cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards.
