Mahara Sakura Trees is a breathtaking 750-meter-long avenue located in Takawa-cho, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Situated in a highland area at an altitude of approximately 680m to 690m, the path offers a spectacular view of the majestic Mt. Kaikoma towering in the background. The avenue is lined with about 200 Yoshino cherry trees (Somei Yoshino), creating a seamless harmony between the delicate pink blossoms and the rugged mountain scenery. The peak bloom usually occurs in early April and lasts for a few days to about a week.
This region is celebrated for its rich natural beauty and highland landscapes that change with every season. The Yoshino cherry trees at Mahara have an average age of about 45 years, serving as a vital element of the local natural landscape. The area maintains a harmonious balance between agriculture and nature, drawing many visitors who come to witness the seasonal transitions of the Yamanashi highlands.
The most iconic view is the sight of Mt. Kaikoma framed by the end of the 750m cherry tree path. The contrast between the soft pink of the Yoshino cherry blossoms and the high, imposing mountain behind them is a unique visual experience found only here. Additionally, during certain periods, local agricultural stands may be set up along the path, allowing visitors to experience local flavors and culture.
The best time to visit is early April. While full bloom often occurs around the beginning of April, the exact timing can vary depending on the year's temperature. Because the landscape changes significantly based on weather and light, it is important to check the current blooming status before visiting. Note that the blooming period here tends to be about a few days to 10 days later than the nearby 'Yamada Takashiro Sakura'.
You can enjoy a relaxing stroll along the cherry tree-lined path. During the blossom season, you may encounter the 'Mahara Sakura Marche' or similar local events, providing a wonderful opportunity to experience local food and regional culture. There are also small stands nearby where you can purchase local agricultural products.
The area is home to several other famous cherry blossom spots. For instance, the nearby 'Yamada Takashiro Sakura' offers a different blooming schedule and character. Since this is a high-altitude highland area, you can explore the broader natural beauty of Yamanashi alongside other highland sightseeing destinations.
Because the altitude is approximately 680m, temperatures can be quite low even in spring. We recommend bringing layers or a warm jacket to stay comfortable. Regarding payments, local stands and event organizers may accept cash, credit cards, or transportation IC cards (such as Suica/Pasmo), but it is always wise to carry some cash. Please be aware that parking areas become very crowded during the peak season, so plan your travel early. Note that large-scale drinking parties (Hanami/outdoor banquets) are strictly prohibited. English-language signage and staff support availability depends on the specific event or seasonal operations.
