Catholic Magome Church is a beautiful Gothic-style church located on Iojima Island in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture. It is beloved as a symbol of the island and is officially registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Situated on a high vantage point, its silhouette is a vital part of the Iojima landscape and can be admired from the sea, such as during a Gunkanjima (Hashima Island) cruise. The origins of this church date back to a small chapel built by local believers in 1871 (Meiji 4), during a period of strict religious prohibitions. The history of the site includes a brick church built in 1890 (Meiji 23) that suffered damage from a typhoon; the current structure was completed in 1931 (Showa 6). It stands as a testament to the faith that the community protected through Nagasaki's complex and difficult history, serving as a spiritual pillar for the region. The Gothic architectural style is characterized by its emphasis on verticality, creating a majestic space designed for solemn prayer.
