Magome-juku is a historic post town located in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture. Situated at the foot of the Central Southern Alps, the area is characterized by a beautiful 'satoyama' landscape of rice paddies and forests nestled within a sloping terrain. It once flourished as a vital station along the Nakasendo, one of the most important highways connecting Kyoto to Edo (modern-day Tokyo). Today, the town preserves its historical atmosphere with stone-paved streets, traditional waterwheels, and classic architecture, offering a true glimpse into Japan's past.
The area developed as a key segment of the Nakasendo during the early Edo period. As a major route connecting the ancient capitals, Magome served as a crucial hub within the steep and challenging 'Kiso Road' section. The settlement's structure, which utilizes the natural elevation of the terrain, and the buildings lining the road, continue to convey the transport and cultural roles of that era. Ongoing preservation efforts ensure that the traditional Japanese way of life and historical landscape remain intact for future generations.
The most iconic feature of Magome-juku is its beautiful stone-paved uphill streets. The area surrounding Magome-juku is rich with other historical sites along the Nakasendo. The hiking route extending from Magome is particularly famous for its scenic beauty and natural surroundings. Due to the many sloped, stone-paved streets, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are essential. If you plan to hike the Nakasendo, please bring weather-appropriate clothing and enough water.
