SCMAGLEV and Railway Park is a specialized museum dedicated to the history and technology of railways, located in the Kinjo-futo area of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The museum features an impressive collection of rolling stock, including superconducting Maglev technology, various generations of Shinkansen (bullet trains), and conventional trains. Many of the displayed vehicles have strong ties to the Tokai region, allowing visitors to visually trace the evolution of Japanese rail transport. The facility houses 35 display vehicles indoors and 4 vehicles in the outdoor exhibition area.
Opened on March 14, 2011, this facility plays a vital role in introducing the advancement of railway technology and its profound impact on society. The collection includes vehicles of significant historical value. For instance, the steam locomotive 'Hoji 6014' is a vehicle that has been designated as a candidate for an Important Cultural Property by the Council for Cultural Affairs. Through these authentic machines, the museum conveys the journey of the railway technology that supported Japan's modernization.
The museum boasts a vast array of Shinkansen and conventional train cars from various eras. Notable outdoor displays include the three-car X0 set of the Shinkansen N700 series test train. Inside, visitors can explore the inner workings of the railway through various simulators. The museum is designed not just for viewing static displays, but also for learning the technical mechanics behind the scenes.
While the museum is a year-round destination, the extensive indoor exhibits make it an excellent choice regardless of the weather. Most vehicles are kept in static preservation (non-operational), but special events are occasionally held where the interiors of certain trains are opened to the public. In the past, there have been special open days for the interiors of Shinkansen test trains and diesel multiple units. We highly recommend checking the official information in advance to catch these rare opportunities.
Visitors can engage with railway simulators to learn the mechanics of train operation. While most displays are static, certain limited-access events allow you to step inside the carriages. For organized groups such as schools or kindergartens, the facility offers services including staff-led orientations and lunch arrangements (such as reserving space in the center deck for bento meals).
Located in the Kinjo-futo bay area of Nagoya, the museum is conveniently situated near other major attractions like LEGOLAND Japan and Port Messe Nagoya, making it an easy addition to a Nagoya sightseeing itinerary. Access is highly convenient via public transport, being just a 2-minute walk from the Kinjofuto Station on the Aonami Line.
The facility is fully barrier-free, offering wheelchair-accessible entrances, paths, and restrooms. As you will be walking around and between large train cars, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. For payment, you can use cash or major transportation IC cards such as TOICA, Suica, or manaca. Please note that most vehicles are for static display only, and access to certain areas is restricted; please follow all posted rules and staff instructions during your visit.
