The Kyū-Usui Pass Observation Deck is a nature-rich lookout point situated on the border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures. From this vantage point, visitors are treated to a magnificent panoramic view of the majestic Mount Asama. The landscape also extends to include the beautiful mountain ranges of Nikko and Yatsugatake, offering a diverse and ever-changing natural scenery that shifts beautifully with each season.
This area has a long history as a vital transportation route. The natural environment and the topography related to the old Usui Pass have been carefully preserved over the years. Visitors can enjoy the vast, sweeping vistas while feeling a deep connection to the historical landscape that has coexisted with nature for centuries.
The greatest draw is the grand mountain scenery that unfolds before your eyes. You can witness the imposing presence of Mount Asama alongside the distant peaks of the Nikko and Yatsugatake ranges all at once. Additionally, the seasonal color transitions, such as the vibrant way the autumn foliage spreads across the foothills, provide a unique and unforgettable visual experience.
The scenery changes dramatically depending on the season. From spring to summer, the landscape is covered in lush greenery, while autumn brings a spectacular display of colorful foliage across the mountains. The view is particularly striking when the autumn colors reach the lower slopes. For the clearest views of the mountain silhouettes, we recommend visiting on clear days or during times when the air is particularly crisp and stable.
Near the observation deck, you can enjoy the "Old Usui Pass Walking Trail." This is a beginner-friendly hiking course that takes approximately 90 minutes to ascend and 60 minutes to descend. It is an excellent way to immerse yourself in nature and enjoy the refreshing mountain air while exploring the local environment.
The nearby Karuizwa area is home to many other attractions. You might consider visiting Kumoba Pond, St. Paul's Catholic Church, or Shiraito Falls. There are also other viewpoints nearby, such as Mt. Hanakuriyama or Mt. Yakezaki, which offer different perspectives of Mount Asama. Walking the natural trails around the old Usui Pass allows for a much deeper connection with the local landscape.
As this is a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes and appropriate clothing are highly recommended. If you plan to use the hiking trails, athletic shoes or trekking shoes are best. It is also wise to bring layers for temperature control and sun protection depending on the season.
