The Former Tsuruga Port Station Building (Tsuruga Railway Museum) is a two-story Western-style building characterized by its striking pointed roof. The architecture features a beautiful contrast of white and deep gray (or black), accented by small dormer windows on the roof. This facility serves as a dedicated space to showcase the history of the railways in Tsuruga, with precious historical artifacts and exhibits spread across both the first and second floors.

Historical Background

This building was completed in November 1882 (Meiji 15), during the period when the railway line between Tsuruga and Nagahama was first established. Along with the old Nagahama Station building, it is considered one of the oldest railway-related structures in Japan. The building was donated to Tsuruga City by Japan Freight Railway Company on February 5, 2014. Since then, it has undergone extensive restoration work, including the restoration of its tiled roofing and structural repairs, to preserve its original historical appearance.

The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. As exhibition contents may change periodically, we recommend checking for the latest information before your visit. The bright daylight hours are ideal for appreciating the intricate details of the Western-style architecture and the exterior of the building.
