The Former To-O Gijuku Foreign Teacher's Residence is a historic two-story wooden Western-style building located in Hirosaki, Aomori. It features a classic design with a pale cream exterior and deep green trim. This building is closely linked to the To-O Gijuku school, founded during the Meiji era to cultivate future leaders, and served as a residence for foreign teachers. The structure showcases authentic Western architectural elements, including a brick foundation, a king-post truss roof system, and interior fireplaces, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of that era.
To-O Gijuku was a private school founded in 1868 by figures such as Kuro Kurachi, evolving from the former domain school, Keikokan. The school focused on English studies, attracting many foreign teachers, including the Methodist missionary John Ing. While the original residence built in 1890 was lost to fire in 1899, the current structure was rebuilt in 1890. It stands as a significant cultural asset, representing the influx of Western culture and the history of foreign-led education in Japan during the Meiji era.
The exterior features beautiful horizontal siding and elegant vertical sash windows that lend a sense of prestige. A reddish-brown brick chimney serves as a striking architectural accent. Inside, you can observe Western-style elements such as fireplaces and bay windows, which reveal the structural design of a typical Western living space from that period.
