The Former Takashiro Family Residence is a historic building located within the Chiran Samurai District in Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima. This area is defined by a unique landscape that evolved alongside the Sata clan, who governed the Chiran region during the Edo period. The residence is particularly notable for its heavy stone walls and beautifully manicured shrubbery, which are said to be influenced by Ryukyuan and Chinese architectural styles, creating a distinct atmosphere different from other regions in Japan. The garden, which uses the majestic Mt. Unzen as a borrowed way-scape (shakkei), offers a precious glimpse into the lifestyle and aesthetics of the samurai class.
During the Edo period, Chiran was governed by the Sata clan, a branch of the Shimazu family. The Sata clan played a vital role within the Satsuma Domain. Many of the current samurai residences, including this one, are believed to have been constructed during the era of the 18th head of the Sata family, Shimazu Kumitane (reigned 1732–1772). Because Chiran was a significant hub for Ryukyu trade during the Edo period, the architectural styles and garden designs reflect Ryukyuan influences. For example, features such as the 'Hinpun' (screen stone) at the entrance and 'Seganto' (stone charms to ward off evil) are characteristic elements deeply connected to Okinawan culture.
