The former site of Sen-to-ji Temple is located in Kunimi-cho, Kunisaki City, Oita Prefecture. This site holds a profound history, having once been so prosperous that it was referred to as the "West Koya-san." Today, the area has been developed into the "Rokugo Mansan Fureai Forest Park." Visitors can explore stone structures that hint at the former temple's presence, all set within a lush, natural environment. The charm of this location lies in its quiet, contemplative atmosphere and the seamless integration of ancient ruins with the surrounding forest.
This site was once home to the Sen-to-ji Temple. According to historical records, the temple is deeply connected to Ninmon (Ninmon Bosatsu), a figure associated with the founding of the various temples of Rokugo Mansan. Legend says the name originated when Ninmon was practicing at the nearby Tsutsuji Iwaya; the Dragon King of the East Sea was so moved by his virtue that he offered a thousand lights (燈 - to) to the site. While the temple once flourished as a central hub with many sub-temples, it underwent many changes, including the destruction of its grand buildings by fire over the centuries. Today, the site is carefully preserved as a significant historical landmark.

The primary attraction of the former site of Sen-to-ji Temple is the sight of historical remains nestled within nature. Within the well-maintained park, you can enjoy moss-covered stone statues, weathered stone steps, and ancient stone walls that evoke a sense of deep history. The changing seasons also provide a spectacular backdrop; in autumn, the surrounding trees transform into vibrant colors, creating a stunning contrast between the ancient stone structures and the natural landscape.
The most recommended time to visit is autumn. Around late November, the surrounding foliage turns brilliant shades of gold and orange, adding a layer of color to the historical scenery. Visiting during the daytime is also highly recommended, as the sunlight filtering through the canopy creates beautiful patterns on the ground, highlighting the natural beauty of the forest.

Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks through the historical ruins and nature trails. Walking through the well-maintained forest park allows for a meditative experience, where you can reflect on the history of the former temple while breathing in the fresh forest air. It is a perfect place for a peaceful stroll and quiet contemplation.
