The Old Sakai Lighthouse is a significant historical landmark located in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. It is characterized by its unique Western-style wooden structure perched atop a sturdy stone foundation that juts out into the sea. This lighthouse stands as a regional icon, preserving the coastal atmosphere from the era when Japan was undergoing rapid modernization.
Constructed during the period of Japan's modernization, the lighthouse features a distinctive design with a wooden tower rising from a solid stone base. Having stood through many eras of local history, this structure is recognized as a national historical site, preserving its immense cultural and historical value for future generations.
The most striking feature is the structural contrast between the stone foundation set within the sea and the wooden lighthouse body above it. The white-painted walls, the glass-enclosed lantern room at the top, and the domed roof showcase traditional lighthouse architecture. Additionally, during specific periods, the lighthouse is illuminated at night, creating a stunning silhouette against the dark ocean waves.
During the day, visitors can enjoy the sight of the lighthouse against a backdrop of clear blue skies and the open sea. At night, the lighthouse is illuminated according to a specific schedule. For instance, from April 1st to October 13th, a white illumination is typically scheduled. There are also certain awareness days when a blue illumination may be used. Since the light color changes depending on the season and date, it is highly recommended to check the schedule in advance.
The area surrounding the lighthouse is developed into a pleasant promenade, making it an ideal spot for seaside strolls. Regarding the interior of the lighthouse, the structure is occasionally opened to the public for guided tours (accompanied by city officials) around the period of Marine Day. This is a rare opportunity to observe the internal wooden structure that is usually hidden from view.
The area around the lighthouse features a beautiful historical landscape. As you walk along the seaside promenade, you can enjoy views of modern architecture alongside historic stone embankments. The vicinity also includes parks and scenic coastal spots that offer a peaceful atmosphere.
As the site is located directly by the sea, it can be quite windy. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking and bringing layers to protect against the sea breeze.
