Art Plaza is a multifaceted arts and culture complex housed in the former Oita Prefectural Library building. The structure was completed in 1966, designed by the world-renowned architect Arata Isozaki, who hails from Oita. Today, the facility serves as a space to communicate architectural beauty and support the cultural activities of the local community. The building features a total floor area of 4,081.551 m² and a site area of 3,023.4 m², constructed with a reinforced concrete structure spanning one basement level and three floors above ground.
The building was originally completed in 1966 as the "Oita Prefectural Library." When the prefectural library moved to a new location in 1996, the City of Oita took over the site and repurposed it into "Art Plaza," a hub for cultural exchange. Its significant architectural value was officially recognized when it was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 31, 2022. Key architectural features include the exposed concrete hollow beams, the massive exterior pair walls, and an interior space that utilizes skip-floors to create dynamic changes in elevation.
The facility offers various exhibitions and activity spaces across different levels. On the 3rd floor, you can find a permanent exhibition of architectural models and documents of works created by Arata Isozaki around the world, showcasing his monumental achievements. The 1st and 2nd floors serve as community galleries and spaces for artistic creation and cultural activities. The greatest draw is the spatial design itself, which reflects the architect's intent, allowing visitors to experience the structural beauty of the building up close.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing for late-night visits. However, please note that closing times vary by floor. The Museum Shop on the 2nd floor closes at 5:00 PM, and the Arata Isozaki Architectural Exhibition Room on the 3rd floor closes at 6:00 PM. For those wishing to enjoy the exhibitions at a relaxed pace, an early afternoon visit is recommended. The facility is closed during the New Year holidays (December 28 to January 3), though it may remain open if specific events are scheduled.
