The Former Moji Mitsui Club is a historic western-style building designated as a National Important Cultural Property, located in the Moji Port Retro district of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka. Built in 1921 as a social club for Mitsui & Co., it features a striking "half-timbered" architectural style. The contrast between the dark brown woodwork and white walls creates a sophisticated and unique silhouette. This building preserves the glamorous and elegant atmosphere of the era when Moji Port was a thriving hub for international trade and European shipping routes.
Constructed during the Taisho era, this building served as a prestigious social hub for Mitsui & Co. during a time when Moji Port was a bustling international port town. After the war, it was owned by the Japanese National Railways and used as the "Motei Kaikan." In 1990, it was relocated and restored to its current site, where it is now carefully preserved as a historical landmark. It is also recognized as a Modern Industrial Heritage site, representing a vital part of Japan's modernization process. Once a venue for hosting global dignitaries, it continues to share its legacy through its restaurant and exhibition rooms.
The primary draw is the exquisite architectural detail. Beyond the iconic half-timbered exterior, the interior features meticulous Art Deco decorations, including geometric patterns on door and window frames and ornate pillars on the grand staircase. The stained glass and mosaic elements further showcase the luxury of the era. A standout feature is the "Einstein Memorial Room," which recreates the living quarters where Albert Einstein and his wife once stayed, offering a profound connection to history.
