The Former Mikasa Hotel is a significant historical landmark located in Karuizawa, Kitasaku District, Nagano Prefecture. The structure is a pure Western-style wooden building that once boasted the most advanced and luxurious facilities of its time. Today, it is meticulously preserved as a site of immense architectural and historical value.
The hotel originally opened in May 1906 as the "Mikasa Hotel." The building itself is a Western-style wooden structure designed by Japanese architects, blending international aesthetics with local craftsmanship. Due to the many famous figures who once stayed here, it was often referred to as the "Rockefeller of Karuizawa" or the "Rockefeller of the East." Following the war, the site was even used as a facility for the U.S. Army, reflecting the changing eras of the region. In 1980, its architectural significance was officially recognized when it was designated as an Important Cultural Property. It remains a precious cultural heritage site that continues to tell the story of Japan's modernization.
The exterior and interior structure of this pure Western-style wooden building reflect the high-level architectural techniques of the early 20th century. While the original grounds once featured annexes, gardens, tennis courts, a swimming pool, and a cricket yard, the current main building allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of a high-end resort from a bygone era through its preserved architectural styles and grand scale.
The best season to visit is during the summer months, such as July and August, when the greenery is lush. The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the final entry allowed at 4:30 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the intricate details of the wooden structure and the grandeur of the building's design.
While the primary focus is on viewing the historic architecture, visitors can also learn about the culinary history of the era. This includes the cultural context behind certain recipes, such as specific styles of curry and coffee, which were once served to the elite guests of the hotel.
The area around the hotel is highly scenic, particularly Mikasa-dori, a beautiful tree-lined street that connects the hotel to the central Karuizawa Old Town. The surrounding neighborhood is perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering a peaceful atmosphere that complements the historical-themed sightseeing.
