The Former Konishi Family Residence is a historic building designated as a National Important Cultural Property, located in Doshomachi, Chuo-ku, Osaka. Completed in 1903, it served as the former headquarters of Konishi Co., Ltd. and stands as an iconic symbol of Doshomachi, famously known as the 'Town of Medicine' in Osaka. This building, which preserves the traditional 'Omoya-zukuri' architectural style, has been carefully preserved through air raids and natural disasters. Today, it serves as a museum open to the public, conveying the daily lives of traditional merchants and the history of the company's growth alongside Konishi Co., Ltd.
The history of this building dates back to the founding of 'Ki-Konishiya' (the predecessor of the current Konishi Co., Ltd.) as a medicine merchant in 1870. The building has evolved alongside the company's expansion from the production and sale of alcohol and spirits to industrial chemicals and chemical products. In the post-war era, the company became widely known as a manufacturer of the famous adhesive 'Bond.' The history of this corporate development is etched into the very fabric of this site. In 2001, its historical and architectural significance was officially recognized when it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
The museum is divided into two main areas: the 'Residential Tour Zone,' which preserves the original atmosphere of the home, and the 'Exhibition Zone,' which has been renovated from the former shop space. In the Residential Tour Zone, visitors can experience the spatial layout and lifestyle of a traditional merchant family. The Exhibition Zone features precious items once kept in the storehouse and materials documenting the history of Konishi Co., Ltd. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a multi-faceted historical perspective through detailed architectural models and sections introducing the history of the Sakai-suji area.
Please note that the facility is only open twice a week: on Tuesdays and Fridays. It operates in two sessions: a morning session (10:00–12:00) and an afternoon session (13:00–17:00). Since the tour takes place inside the historic building, it is a great way to experience history regardless of the weather outside. Visiting during the early morning session allows for a more tranquil atmosphere to appreciate the intricate architectural details. As opening days are limited, please be sure to check the schedule in advance.
Beyond a simple architectural tour, this site offers a visual journey into the traditional merchant culture of Osaka's Semba district. Through the displayed artifacts, visitors can understand the industrial transitions from the Meiji to the Showa eras and the role of local businesses in society. The exhibition zone specifically allows you to observe the functional layout of what once served as a bustling commercial space.
The museum is located in Doshomachi, a district famous as Osaka's 'Town of Medicine.'
