The Former National Railway Temiya Line is a beautiful walking path developed along the route of a railway that once supported the logistics and development of Hokkaido. The path, where the original railway tracks remain, invites visitors into a nostalgic world. It is one of Otaru's most iconic strolls, where historical architecture harmonizes beautifully with the changing colors of nature.
This site holds significant historical value as part of the 'Government-run Horonai Railway,' the first railway in Hokkaido, which opened in 1880. This line played a crucial role in the modernization and development of Hokkaido. During its peak, the area was a bustling hub for transporting coal and marine products, reflecting an era when Otaru was known as the 'Heart of Hokkaido.' Although passenger services ended in 1962 and freight operations ceased in 1985, the site is now preserved as a precious cultural heritage and is part of the 'Tan-Tetsu-Ko' (Coal, Iron, and Port) Japan Heritage.
As you walk the path, you will encounter remnants of the original tracks and station sites. The interplay between the historic structures and the seasonal greenery is particularly captivating. For instance, in autumn, the ivy covering the walls turns vibrant shades of red and orange, creating a highly photogenic and nostalgic atmosphere. The primary activity is a leisurely stroll along the former railway tracks. It is a unique opportunity to take photographs on the actual tracks—a view rarely seen elsewhere.
