The Former Kaichi School is a historic elementary school building located in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. In 2019, it was designated as a National Treasure of Japan. It is a premier example of "pseudo-Western architecture" (giyofū kenchiku), where traditional Japanese design seamlessly blends with Western architectural styles. This site offers a unique window into the Meiji era, allowing visitors to experience how Japanese education evolved during a period of rapid modernization. Following extensive seismic reinforcement work, the school reopened to the public in November 2024.
