The Former Iwata Family Residence, located in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, is a historic residence that preserves the architectural style of the late Edo period through the Bunka era (circa 1800). The building was donated to Hirosaki City by Mr. Natsushiro Iwata in 1981. Its most striking feature is the preservation of its original structural components, including the pillars, roof framing, and the massive thatched roof (kayabuki). It serves as an exceptional site to observe the intricate details of traditional Japanese construction techniques firsthand.
While there are various theories regarding the exact date of construction, the building's structural characteristics and historical records suggest it was built between the late Kansei era and the Bunka era. The facility is open from 10:00 to 16:00; visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the fine details of the wooden architecture.
