The Former Ito Family Residence is a precious piece of architectural history located within the 'Hirosaki Nakamachi Traditional Buildings Preservation District' in Aomori Prefecture. Originally the home of the Ito family, who served as domain physicians (doctors for the local lords), this residence is a designated treasure of Aomori Prefecture. The residence offers a remarkably high-fidelity reconstruction of the living spaces of mid-ranking samurai from the late Edo period. Visitors can experience authentic Japanese traditional culture through architectural features such as the formal entrance way (shikidai), the spacious main hall, and the unique mezzanine level (nakani-kai) that reflects the clever use of space in historical dwellings.
The building preserves the architectural style of the early 19th century. While the structure has undergone several renovations over the years, its current form was meticulously restored during a relocation process to faithfully recreate the atmosphere of the physician's residence. In 1978, the Nakamachi area of Hirosaki was selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, cementing this residence's status as a symbol of the region's historical landscape. This area, located north of Hirosaki Castle, still retains the layout of the old castle town, preserving the cultural heritage of the samurai district.
Inside, you will find numerous design elements that convey the prestige of the era. A major highlight is the 'Sukashi-bori' (openwork carving) found in the transoms above the rooms, which adds a sense of elegance and dignity to the space. The 'Nakani-kai' (mezzanine) structure above the living areas demonstrates the practical wisdom of the time, maximizing space within a hierarchical living arrangement. Other notable features include the sturdy yet simple wooden floors, the 'Chigatana' (offset shelves), and the functional layout of the rooms (including the main hall, sitting rooms, and kitchen) that showcase the aesthetic of a samurai household.

As much of the interior features traditional tatami mat flooring, please follow the house rules to preserve the historic structure. It is helpful to be prepared to remove your shoes upon entry. Since this is a precious cultural property, please observe the instructions of the staff and enjoy the viewing quietly.
