The Former Ikeda Family Garden, located in Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, is a beautiful 'Chisen-kaiyu-shiki' (pond-stroll) garden designed during the late Meiji to Taisho eras. This garden was once part of the estate of the Ikeda family, who were known as one of the three major wealthy landowners in the Tohoku region. Today, it is designated as a National Scenic Spot. The landscape is a unique blend of traditional Japanese landscaping and Western architectural influences, featuring a massive 4-meter-tall snow-viewing lantern (yukimi-doro) and a historic Western-style mansion. The garden offers a different way to experience beauty depending on the season, with lush greenery, vibrant autumn colors, and serene snowscapes.
The Ikeda family traces its roots back to samurai who settled in this region during the medieval and early modern periods. By the Meiji and Taisho eras, they had become prominent figures in the local economy and politics as leading landowners. The garden's design incorporates the aesthetic vision of Yasuhira Nagaoka, resulting in a highly sophisticated stroll garden. In 2004, it was officially designated as a National Scenic Spot. The Western-style mansion on the grounds is also a significant cultural asset, representing the modernization of Japan during that era. The history of the Ikeda family and their role in the region's development are deeply woven into the tranquil atmosphere of the garden.
