The Former Kumitomi Family Residence is a building that deeply preserves the atmosphere of the Taisho era, located in Saga City, Saga Prefecture. It was built in 1921 (Taisho 10) by Kameichi Kumitomi, the first generation of the Kumitomi family, as the 'Kumitomi Footwear Store.' Situated facing the old Nagasaki Kaido highway, the structure is characterized by its main house (East Wing) and storehouse (West Wing) standing side by side. The main entrance is approximately 9 meters wide, giving the building a grand and imposing presence as a significant large-scale machiya from the Taisho period.
While preserving its historic exterior, the interior has been thoughtfully renovated for modern use. The first floor houses a cafe and a photo studio, while the second floor is utilized by various tenants as ateliers and studios, making it a functional modern living space. Recognized as a Saga Prefecture Heritage site, it remains a vital piece of local history.
This building has a rich history as a footwear wholesaler that once operated extensively throughout the region. During the era of the second generation, Yoshiji, the business expanded significantly, establishing a footwear manufacturing site in Hita City, Oita Prefecture, and even expanding its sales network to the Korean Peninsula. It played a crucial role in the local economy until approximately 1980.
The interior preserves many artifacts and features from that era. For example, the beams and earthen floors (doma) in the East Wing remain intact, and the original wooden sign that reads 'Kumitomi Footwear Store' is still displayed inside, offering a glimpse into the bustling commercial life of the past.
The most striking feature is the traditional Japanese exterior, boasting beautiful white walls and black tiled roofs. The passage between the main house and the storehouse leads toward the southern riverside, creating a scenic view that captures the nostalgic atmosphere of Yanagimachi. The western part of the building features a robust, traditional storehouse (kura) construction.
Inside, visitors can observe the remnants of the former workspace, the structural layout of the second floor once used for storage, and the original beams and earthen floors. Since it is currently used as a cafe, you can experience the intersection of history and modern culture firsthand.
During the bright daylight hours, the contrast between the white walls and the blue sky is exceptionally beautiful, allowing you to see the architectural details clearly. The scenery harmonizes perfectly with the peaceful streets of the surrounding Yanagimachi area.
Depending on the season, you can also enjoy the changing colors of the surrounding vegetation. A single deciduous tree in front of the building changes its appearance with the seasons, adding color to the landscape. We recommend spending a relaxing afternoon here enjoying the cafe-style atmosphere.
The building operates as a multi-purpose space utilizing its historical architecture. At the first-floor cafe, you can enjoy drinks and light snacks within a traditional setting. The second floor serves as a hub for creative activities, housing various ateliers and studios.
As the building also functions as a photo studio, it is possible to take professional-quality photographs within a genuine Japanese machiya setting. The charm of this site lies in its continuous evolution from a historical residence to a modern, functional space.
The Former Kumitomi Family Residence is part of the Saga City Museum of History and Folklore complex.
