Kyoto Aquarium is a unique facility themed around the natural environments and aquatic ecosystems of the Kyoto region. The centerpiece is a magnificent large tank designed to express the essence of the 'Kyoto Sea,' providing a breathtaking view of various fish species. Visitors can also enjoy up-close encounters with popular animals such as penguins and fur seals, offering a deep connection to the water-based life of the area.
Opened in 2012, the facility was developed as a significant architectural project by Orix Real Estate. The three-story building, constructed with a sturdy reinforced concrete structure, serves as a cultural hub dedicated to educating the public about Kyoto's natural environment and its rich history of water-related culture.
The aquarium features diverse exhibition zones designed to immerse visitors in different habitats. The most iconic feature is the large central tank, which beautifully depicts the marine environment. Another major draw is the scheduled feeding sessions; you can witness the lively movements of penguins and fur seals during specific times of the day. The exhibits are carefully curated to focus on the delicate ecosystems of the water's edge, including specialized areas where you can see creatures like garden eels in their natural-looking habitats.
While the aquarium is a great indoor destination year-round, it is particularly popular during the hot summer months of July and August. To make the most of your visit, we highly recommend arriving during the scheduled feeding times to see the animals at their most active. Key feeding times include: 'Large Tank Feeding' at 12:30 PM, 'Penguin Feeding' at 1:00 PM, and 'Fur Seal Feeding' at 2:15 PM.
Beyond simple observation, the aquarium offers educational programs led by professional staff. On the second floor, the workshop space known as 'Mitette' hosts various programs and exhibits designed to deepen your understanding of aquatic life. These interactive sessions provide a wonderful opportunity for both children and adults to learn about the biology and conservation of these species through expert guidance.
Located in the convenient Umekoji area, Kyoto Aquarium is perfectly positioned for a full day of exploration. It is within walking distance of the Kyoto Railway Museum and Umekoji Park. Combining a visit to the aquarium with the railway museum allows travelers to experience both the natural and industrial history of Kyoto in one trip.
As the exhibits focus on water-based environments, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes to navigate the facility easily. Please note that for ticket purchases and certain procedures, you should arrive at least one hour before the closing time.
