Kuzuryu Jinja Shingu is a sacred shrine located in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture. It enshrines Kuzuryu Okami (the Nine-Headed Dragon), the legendary guardian deity of Lake Ashi. Situated immediately next to the famous Hakone Shrine, the site is characterized by its beautiful vermilion-painted architecture. Many visitors come here to seek divine blessings for financial prosperity (wealth luck), good fortune, and matchmaking (finding a partner or strengthening relationships).
Since ancient times, it has been believed that the Nine-Headed Dragon, the protector of Lake Ashi, resides in this area. Kuzuryu Okami has been revered as a powerful entity that governs nature and water. The history of the shrine is deeply intertwined with the traditions of the region and the neighboring Hakone Shrine, serving as a central pillar of local faith. The Kagura-den (sacred dance hall) hosts various rituals, such as the Setsubun festival and summer grand festivals, contributing to the preservation of local cultural heritage.
The most striking feature of Kuzuryu Jinja Shingu is its vibrant vermilion-colored shrine buildings. The brilliant color creates a stunning harmony with the natural scenery of Lake Ashi, leaving a lasting impression on visitors. Another artistic highlight is the ceiling of the Kagura-den, which features a magnificent ink painting of the 'Kuzuryu' (Nine-Headed Dragon) by the master artist Yoshiyuki Nakano. Additionally, the nearby Treasure Hall (Hobutsu-den) offers a chance to view precious historical artifacts related to the shrine's history.
While the shrine grounds are open 24 hours a day, specific services such as formal prayers (Gokito), the purchase of amulets, and sacred rituals depend on the time of day and season. Visiting during the New Year celebrations or during summer festivals allows you to feel the intense spiritual energy of the rituals. For photography enthusiasts, the bright daylight hours are ideal, as the sunlight beautifully illuminates the contrast between the vermilion shrine, the blue sky, and the surrounding greenery.
Visitors can receive formal prayers (Gokito) dedicated to Kuzuryu Okami to request blessings for wealth, good fortune, or matchmaking. There is also a place to offer charms (Nofuda) to express gratitude. Please note that when offering charms, you must not bring items in metal, ceramic, or glass cases. A popular way to experience the spiritual depth of the area is to perform 'Ryosha-mairi,' a ritual visit to both this shrine and the nearby Hakone Shrine.
Kuzuryu Jinja Shingu is adjacent to Hakone Shrine, one of the most famous landmarks in Hakone. The nearby Hakone Shrine features a Treasure Hall where you can view precious relics (admission for middle school students and older is 500 JPY). Furthermore, the 'Hon-gu' (main shrine) of Kuzuryu Jinja is located on the shores of Lake Ashi, accessible via boat or walking paths. The area is rich in nature, making it an easy and beautiful addition to any Hakone sightseeing itinerary.
When visiting, please observe standard Shinto shrine etiquette. Most payments for amulets, charms, or formal prayers are handled in cash. If you intend to offer an amulet, ensure it is not kept in a metal, ceramic, or glass container. While the shrine grounds are well-maintained, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Basic English signage and information are available in the surrounding tourist area, making it accessible for international visitors.
