Kuwanokidai Wetland is a breathtaking natural sanctuary located in Yajima-cho, Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture. Formed by ancient rockfalls from Mt. Chokai, this high-altitude wetland sits at an elevation of 690 meters and is embraced by a dense forest of beech and deciduous shrubs. Spanning approximately 8 hectares, the area is a true masterpiece of nature. To ensure a safe and comfortable experience, the wetland features well-maintained wooden boardwalks, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the landscape without worrying about the uneven terrain.
The origins of this wetland are deeply rooted in geological history, having been shaped by the accumulation of rockfalls from the nearby Mt. Chokai over many centuries. This process has allowed a unique ecosystem to flourish alongside a pristine beech forest. To preserve this precious natural resource while allowing people to experience its beauty, the area has been carefully managed with the installation of boardwalks. The greatest charm of Kuwanokidai Wetland lies in its seasonal botanical displays. In early June, you can witness the striking sight of 'Eriophorum' (cottongrass), which looks like tiny white cotton balls atop slender stems, and the vibrant colors of 'Rhododendron' flowers. The sight of these plants against the backdrop of the crisp air and the lingering snow of Mt. Chokai is truly exceptional. As you walk along the boardwalk, enjoy the stunning contrast between the deep green of the beech forest and the open expanse of the wetland.
While the wetland is beautiful year-round, the most spectacular time to visit is during the budding season. The arrival of spring in April and May, leading into the peak flowering season of June with Eriophorum and Rhododendron, offers the most vivid colors. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the bright colors of the flora and the lush greenery of the forest. Please be aware that temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the weather and season, so plan your visit accordingly.

To protect this delicate ecosystem, please strictly follow these rules: Eating and disposing of trash within the wetland is strictly prohibited; please take all trash home with you. While the boardwalks provide a stable path, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes suitable for a natural environment. Because temperatures can drop even in warmer months, bring layers to adjust your temperature. Please note that there are no shops or facilities on-site, so ensure you bring your own water and supplies.
