Kutara Lake is a beautiful caldera lake located in Shiraoi, Hokkaido, featuring a striking circular shape with a circumference of approximately 8km. It is believed to have been formed about 40,000 years ago by the collapse of the summit of the Kutara volcano. The lake is remarkably deep, with a maximum depth of approximately 147 meters and an average depth of 104.5 meters. One of its most unique characteristics is its ability to maintain a constant water level despite having no visible river inlets or outlets. The water clarity is among the highest in Japan, drawing visitors who wish to witness its breathtaking, crystal-clear surface.
The name of the lake is thought to be derived from the Ainu word 'Kuttarshi-to' (the lake of Kojohama). The nearby place name, Kojohama, is also related to Ainu terms meaning a place where knotweed grows. Historically, the ecosystem underwent changes in 1910 when Kokanee salmon (Hime-masu) were introduced from Lake Towada and Lake Shikotsu. While the natural landscape remains preserved, the area is deeply connected to the local history and the natural environment of the region.
The primary highlight is the 'Fan-shaped Observatory' (Ogi-gata Tenbodai), which offers a panoramic view of the lake. From this elevated vantage point, you can admire the nearly perfect circular shape of the water from above. The area around the lake is well-equipped with parking lots and walking paths, allowing visitors to descend closer to the water's edge. The extreme transparency of the water creates a mirror-like effect, reflecting the surrounding scenery and providing a deeply tranquil atmosphere.
Access to the Fan-shaped Observatory is available from late April to late November. Please note that roads are closed during the winter season, so plan your visit accordingly. The best time to visit is between May and September, when the lush greenery is most vibrant. Visiting during bright daylight hours allows you to fully appreciate the incredible water clarity and the vivid colors of the lake.
During the fishing season (typically for about three months starting in early May), you can experience Kokanee salmon fishing by renting a boat at the lakeside rest house. Enjoying a quiet moment fishing in the heart of nature is a truly special experience. However, as this area is part of a protected National Park, all activities must strictly follow local conservation rules and regulations.
Kutara Lake is located near the Noboribetsu Onsen area. A short drive will take you to various hot spring resorts and local sightseeing-spots. The nearby 'Noboribetsu Bear Park' is also a popular destination, offering a great way to combine wildlife encounters with the serene lake views. We recommend including Kutara Lake as part of a scenic driving route centered around Shiraoi.
While the lakeside and observatory are well-maintained, please stay on the designated paths to protect the environment. We recommend bringing a light jacket, as temperatures can fluctuate significantly during spring and autumn. Regarding payments, please carry cash if you plan to use local facilities or rest houses. To preserve this pristine environment, swimming, collecting plants or animals, and bringing pets are strictly prohibited. Please respect the local nature and follow all posted rules.
