The Kushiro Shitsugen Observatory is a premier destination for viewing the breathtaking scenery of the Kushiro Wetland, the largest wetland in Japan. The facility is designed to provide both visual splendor and educational depth. The building features a shop and restaurant on the 1st floor, a specialized exhibition zone on the 2nd floor that recreates the local ecosystem, and observation decks on the 3rd floor and rooftop that offer sweeping panoramic views. It serves as a central hub for understanding the diverse natural environment of the region.
The Kushiro Wetland is a precious natural environment known as one of Japan's largest wetlands. This observatory was established to help visitors visually grasp and understand the scale of this vast landscape. The exhibits reflect the unique local ecosystem, specifically highlighting the importance of preserving the environment through displays of local wildlife, such as the legendary giant fish known as the Ito.
The facility offers different experiences on every floor. The 1st floor provides access to a shop and restaurant (entry to the building is free). The 2nd-floor exhibition area features a zone that recreates the wetland environment, with many detailed displays of the flora and fauna, including the Ito. From the 3rd-floor observation room and the rooftop, you can enjoy a massive panorama that stretches from the wetlands to the city of Kushiro and the mountains of Akan. Additionally, a satellite observatory located along a 2.5km walking trail allows you to view the landscape from a different perspective.
The landscape of the wetland changes dramatically with the seasons. You can enjoy the overflowing waters in spring, lush green vegetation in summer, vibrant autumn colors, and a serene, silver world covered in snow during winter. For the best experience, visit during bright daylight hours, when the panoramic view from the 3rd-floor observation room is most vivid and the scale of the wetlands is easiest to appreciate.
Visitors can learn about the local wildlife through detailed exhibits. The 2nd-floor area allows you to see reconstructed displays of precious species like the Ito. You can also immerse yourself in nature by walking the surrounding trails. The route leading to the satellite observatory (approximately 1km clockwise loop) is designed to be barrier-free, ensuring ease of movement for all visitors.
The observatory is surrounded by the stunning natural scenery of Kushiro Shitsugen National Park. Nearby, you can find spots for observing Red-crowned Cranes and various nature trails. The area also serves as a great base for exploring the wider Kushiro and Lake Akan regions.

No advance reservations are required to visit the facility. When using the walking trails or the rooftop, please wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for changing weather and temperatures. Note: Due to rooftop painting work, access to the rooftop will be restricted from May 11, 2026, to June 26, 2026. During this period, only the 3rd-floor observation room will be accessible.
