Kushiro Taiyo Donpaku is a spectacular festival of food and fireworks held in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. The name "Donpaku" is a playful combination of "Don" (the sound of a large firework exploding) and "Paku" (the sound of eating heartily). The event is famous for featuring some of the largest fireworks in Hokkaido, including massive 3-shaku shells. The theme celebrates the bounty of the earth, the riches of the sea, and the beauty of the night sky.
The roots of this event lie in the autumn festivals of the 1990s, such as the Kushiro Cosmos Fair and the Kushiro Wetland Fair. As these events evolved, the community sought to create a new tradition. In 2004, the current "Kushiro Taiyo Donpaku" was established to integrate these local traditions. It also carries the legacy of the fireworks displays once held during the Kushiro Port Festival, ensuring that the tradition of launching massive 2-shaku and 3-shaku shells continues to thrill spectators.
The absolute highlight is the fireworks display. The launch of the 3-shaku shells—one of the largest in Hokkaido—is a breathtaking moment that defines the festival. Beyond the sky, the event is a massive culinary celebration. There are dedicated sections for agricultural fairs and seafood programs. Visitors can explore numerous food stalls offering fresh seafood and local produce from the Kushiro region. Depending on the specific schedule, the event also features live music stages and related local festivities.
The festival is held annually in September, typically centered around the second Saturday of the month for a 3-day period. The main fireworks display usually begins around 19:00, with the climactic 3-shaku shells expected around 19:30. During the daytime, the atmosphere is focused on the food fairs, agricultural displays, and various stage performances.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of food-related programs. The agricultural fair showcases the best of Hokkaido's farming, while the seafood programs highlight the fresh catches of the Kushiro coast. The event seamlessly blends the natural beauty of Kushiro with its culinary heritage and spectacular pyrotechnics, offering a holistic cultural experience.
The main venue is located around the Kushiro City Tourism International Exchange Center. Other nearby notable areas include the Kushiro Fishery Center (Marine Pos Kushiro), Kushiro Fukko Market, Sakaemachi Heiwa Park, and the Kushiro River area. For the best views of the fireworks, popular spots include the North Pier, Yomeicho Park, Kushiro City Lifelong Learning Center, and the area near Kushiro Fisherman's Wharf MOO.
As the event takes place in open-air plazas and near the waterfront, please prepare for temperature drops. September nights in Kushiro can be quite chilly, so bringing a warm jacket or coat is highly recommended. Most food stalls require cash payments. If you wish to secure a good viewing spot for the fireworks, arrive early. Please be mindful of others, follow local etiquette, and ensure you take all your trash with you or use designated bins.
