Nihonmatsu Lookout is a premier observation spot located within the Kushiro Wetland in Hokkaido. Situated near Route 1060 (the Kucharohara No-to Line), the lookout sits atop a hill on the eastern side of the Kushiro River. Because there are very few tall trees in the immediate vicinity, the area offers an expansive, unobstructed panoramic view. From this vantage point, you can witness the elegant curves of the Kushiro River as it meanders through the wetlands, the vastness of the marshlands, and the distant skyline of Kushiro City.
This area is part of the Kushiro Wetland, one of Japan's largest and most significant wetland ecosystems. While the Nihonmatsu Lookout itself is a natural vantage point rather than a site with historical buildings or man-made structures, it serves as a vital location for appreciating the region's natural heritage. The landscape has been shaped over millennia by the flow of the Kushiro River, preserving a pristine natural environment that is essential to understanding the local ecology.
The primary draw of Nihonmatsu Lookout is the sight of the Kushiro River winding gracefully through the wetland. Depending on the season and time of day, visitors may also be lucky enough to see the iconic Norokko Train traveling along the Kushiro Line. The sense of openness from the hilltop, where the horizon of the vast sky meets the earth, provides a deeply meditative and grand experience.
While the lookout is accessible year-round, we highly recommend visiting during the daytime. In bright daylight, the vibrant greens of the wetlands and the sparkling movement of the river are most vivid. The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: from the lush, verdant landscapes of spring and summer to the more muted, dramatic tones of autumn.
As the surrounding area consists of unpaved paths and natural terrain, most visitors stop by briefly during a drive or cycling tour to take in the view. Please be aware that the paths leading to the lookout may include steep slopes or sandy sections; use caution when navigating with vehicles or bicycles. The experience is one of pure tranquility, allowing you to feel the wind and the silence of nature.
There are several other notable observation points nearby, such as the Kottaro Lookout, Sarubo Lookout, and Iwahoki-yama Lookout. Additionally, to deepen your understanding of the Kushiro Wetland, you may wish to visit the Shiratoro Nature Information Center or the Tsuru Nature Center (Eco-Museum Center), which are located in the vicinity.
