Kushiro Zoo is a massive facility spanning 47.8 hectares, located in Akan-cho, Kushiro, Hokkaido. Set against the backdrop of Hokkaido's rich natural environment, the zoo houses a wide variety of animals. The zoo places a special emphasis on the conservation and exhibition of animals that symbolize the natural heritage of Hokkaido, allowing visitors to witness the unique behaviors of wildlife throughout the changing seasons.
The zoo has a long-standing history of focusing on the conservation, research, and exhibition of animals within the specific natural ecosystem of Hokkaido. Notably, it has achieved success in the captive breeding of the Blakiston's Fish Owl and serves as a dedicated conservation center for this species. Additionally, the facility includes a Red-crowned Crane conservation and breeding center, playing a crucial role in regional nature preservation efforts.

The zoo features a diverse range of animals, with a primary focus on those that represent the natural essence of Hokkaido. A standout feature is the exhibition of iconic birds like the Red-crowned Crane and the Blakiston's Fish Owl. Beyond birds, the zoo also boasts successful breeding records for species such as the reticulated giraffe, zebra, and mountain hawk-eagle, providing an environment where you can observe the ecology of various species up close.
The atmosphere of the zoo changes dramatically depending on the season. From spring to autumn, you can observe animals in their most active states. However, the winter season offers a unique way to enjoy the park; during the snowy months, the zoo sets up ski courses and sledding hills, creating a perfect environment for playing in the snow. In the summer, an amusement park area also operates, making it an ideal time for families to visit.

Beyond simple observation, visitors can enjoy seasonal activities. In winter, the park transforms into a recreational space with snow-based activities like skiing and sledding. There is also a BBQ area available (please check current availability and conditions as they vary by year), allowing you to enjoy a meal surrounded by the vastness of nature.
Kushiro Zoo is situated in a naturally lush area of Kushiro City. The surrounding landscape is characterized by famous sites like the Kushiro Marsh, making the zoo an excellent starting point for exploring the deep natural beauty of Hokkaido. Depending on the season, you can easily plan a travel route that combines a visit to the zoo with nearby commercial facilities and other sightseeing spots.
Because the zoo grounds are extremely vast and weather can change rapidly (including snow and rain), we highly recommend wearing comfortable clothing and bringing seasonal gear such as warm layers or raincoats. Specifically, if visiting in winter, sturdy shoes suitable for walking on snow and ice are essential.
