Kusatsu Onsen Yubatake is the centerpiece of Kusatsu Onsen, located in the heart of the town. It is a spectacular sight where approximately 4,000 liters of hot spring water gush out every minute. The orderly arrangement of wooden water troughs (toi) used to regulate temperature and the process of collecting "Yunohana" (mineral crystals) create a powerful and traditional landscape. The area is well-maintained with stone fences and walkways, making it a popular gathering point for visitors exploring the hot spring town.
The area surrounding Yubatake is rich with historical structures. For instance, stone pillars and water frames related to the 8th Shogun, Yoshimune, remain as a testament to the long-standing history of this hot spring culture. The hot spring water flows through seven organized wooden troughs to lower its temperature before being distributed to various local accommodations and facilities. This traditional system has supported the water supply of Kusatsu for many years.
The greatest spectacle at Yubatake is the dynamic flow of water and the thick clouds of steam rising from the spring. Nearby, you can find the "Shirane-san Bench," shaped like Mount Shirane, and various park areas perfect for a relaxing stroll after a soak. The unique process of collecting "Yunohana" (hot spring minerals) is a signature feature of this location. Additionally, right in front of the Yubatake, you can visit "Netsunoyu" to witness the traditional "Yumomi" (water stirring) performance.
Yubatake offers a different atmosphere depending on the time of day. The most magical experience occurs during the night illumination, which runs from sunset until 24:00. Indirect lighting illuminates the wooden troughs and stone fences, creating a mystical space filled with rising steam. A night walk allows you to enjoy a much calmer and more serene atmosphere than during the day. While the hot spring flows year-round, the steam becomes particularly dramatic and visually striking during the cold winter months.
You can experience the unique culture of Kusatsu around the Yubatake area. At Netsunoyu, you can watch the "Yumomi and Dance Show," where staff in traditional attire perform the rhythmic movements used to cool the hot water. There are also footbath spots like "Yukemuri-tei" where you can soak your feet and enjoy the warmth of the spring for a few minutes. Walking around the Yubatake is a great way to feel the vibrant energy of the town.
Many accommodations, restaurants, and public bathhouses are clustered around the Yubatake. The famous "Shiroki-no-yu," one of the largest public bathhouses in Kusatsu, is located nearby. The location is extremely convenient for sightseeing, with the Netsunoyu facility situated directly in front of the spring. The surrounding streets are paved with stone and tiles, allowing you to enjoy a nostalgic atmosphere while exploring the local facilities.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the area features uneven surfaces, steps, and potentially wet ground. When using public bathhouses like Shiroki-no-yu, please be careful with your valuables, as they may not have secure lockers. Please carry cash for local shops and follow local etiquette when using public transportation and visiting facilities.
