Kururi Castle is a historic castle site situated on the hills of Kimitsu City, Chiba Prefecture. It is famously known as the "Rain Castle" (Ujo) due to its topographical tendency to be shrouded in mist and rain. Throughout the medieval and early modern periods, powerful clans such as the Satomi and Kuroda families used this site as a strategic stronghold. Today, the site features a reconstructed keep completed in 1978 and the Kururi Castle Site Museum, which preserves the historical documents and artifacts of the region. It serves as a vital cultural hub for understanding the castle culture of the Boso Peninsula.
Legend has it that the first fortification on this site was established by Touno Shoyu Yoritane, a son of the legendary warrior Taira no Masakado during the mid-Heian period. While these legends remain unverified, the site's documented history is deeply tied to the Satomi and Kuroda clans. Although the castle was decommissioned in 1871, its historical value has been meticulously preserved. As part of a centennial preservation project, the keep was reconstructed to ensure that the legacy of the region remains alive for future generations.
The centerpiece of the site is the reinforced concrete keep completed in 1978. Standing approximately 15 meters tall with a total floor area of about 190 square meters, the structure features white plaster walls and a design reminiscent of traditional Japanese architecture. Surrounding the keep, you can observe the impressive stone walls (ishigaki) made of andesite, stacked roughly 2 meters high. These walls offer a visual and tactile connection to the sophisticated fortification techniques used in the past.
Due to its geography, Kururi Castle is often characterized by the appearance of mist. Visiting during these misty periods can offer a mystical and ethereal view of the castle emerging from the clouds. While the site is accessible in all seasons, we recommend checking the museum's operating hours and local weather forecasts before your visit.
