Kurumayama Shitsugen is a precious high-altitude wetland located in the Kirigamine area of Nagano Prefecture, designated as a National Natural Monument. Situated at the foot of Mt. Kuruma, the highest peak in the Kirigamine range, the area features well-maintained boardwalk paths for easy exploration. This wetland is a site of immense scientific value, where the balance between nature conservation and public enjoyment is carefully maintained. This area is part of the Kirigamine Wetland Plant Community (which includes Yashima-gara and Odoriba wetlands) and is protected as a National Natural Monument. The soil of the wetland is extremely delicate and highly vulnerable to external damage. Consequently, strict management is carried out by the Suwa City Board of Education and related organizations. Since 2001, continuous efforts have been made to maintain the boardwalks to protect the wetland while ensuring visitor safety. Historically, these patrols and maintenance efforts have played a vital role in preserving the natural environment for future generations.
The greatest charm of Kurumayama Shitsugen is the expansive view of the wetlands seen from the sturdy boardwalks. The surrounding landscape changes its expression with every season, showcasing unique high-altitude vegetation. By walking along the paths, you can observe delicate plants and the unique topography of the high-altitude terrain up close. The area also serves as a key part of the hiking routes to the summit of Mt. Kurura, offering a lush, natural trail. The contrast between the silence of nature and the vast green expanse under the wide-open sky never fails to captivate visitors.
The best time to visit Kurumayama Shitsugen is from May to September. From spring through summer, you can enjoy the lush greenery and seasonal wildflowers unique to this high-altitude environment. The colors of nature change beautifully throughout the season. However, during snowy periods or unstable weather, access to areas outside the designated boardwalks is strictly prohibited to ensure both nature conservation and visitor safety. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to clearly experience the vastness of the wetland and the vivid blue of the sky.
Visitors can enjoy nature walks and hiking using the well-maintained boardwalks. Popular activities include hiking through the natural landscape toward Mt. Kuruma or exploring the route via Chochobimiyama toward the Yashima-gara wetland. Please note that for the sake of environmental protection, stepping off the boardwalks is strictly forbidden. Collecting plants or catching insects is also prohibited; visitors are expected to observe nature with respect. Walking through the crisp, clean air of the highlands provides a peaceful moment to escape the stresses of daily life.
The area around Kurumayama Shitsugen is dotted with other fascinating wetlands. As this is a protected natural area, strict adherence to etiquette is required. We recommend comfortable clothing suitable for hiking and sturdy footwear (such as trekking shoes). Because of the high altitude, please prepare for sudden weather changes by bringing an extra layer or jacket.
