Kuroki no Dai-to is a legendary old wisteria tree designated as a National Natural Monument, located within the grounds of Susanoo Shrine in Kuroki Town, Yame City, Fukuoka Prefecture. This ancient tree has survived for over 600 years, enduring numerous wars and fires throughout history. From mid-April to early May, the wisteria trellis becomes draped in massive, cascading purple flower clusters, some exceeding 1 meter in length, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
The history of this wisteria is deeply rooted in the past; legend says it was planted in 1395 by Prince Ryosei of the Gosho Seishi lineage. Throughout its long life, the tree has demonstrated incredible resilience, surviving harsh environments and historical upheavals. Due to its immense historical and biological value, it was designated as a National Natural Monument in 1928. It stands as a precious natural heritage that has grown alongside the local community.
The greatest draw is the vast wisteria trellis spreading across the expansive grounds of Susanoo Shrine. Covering approximately 3,000 square meters, the sight of countless purple blossoms swaying in the breeze is truly majestic. During the peak blooming period, the density of the flowers creates a profound sense of nature's vitality. Additionally, during the 'Yame Kuroki Dai-to Festival' held during the blooming season, evening light-ups are conducted, offering a completely different, mystical view of the flowers than during the day.
The typical blooming season is from mid-April to late April. The 'Yame Kuroki Dai-to Festival' is held to celebrate this period. During daylight hours, you can enjoy the vivid color gradients of the purple blossoms. However, during the festival's evening hours, the light-up events provide a magical experience where the illuminated wisteria creates a serene and ethereal atmosphere under the night sky.
During the peak season, the local 'Yame Kuroki Dai-to Festival' brings the community together. Visitors may find local specialty products and crafts for sale during this time. The period also includes cultural rituals to pray for the wisteria's blooming, offering a chance to touch upon local traditions. It is a perfect time to experience the changing seasons while admiring the sublime beauty of nature.
The Kuroki area is characterized by its historic streetscapes and rich natural environment. Nearby facilities like 'Kutsurogi no Mori Greenpia Yame' make it easy to incorporate this visit into a larger sightseeing route through the nature-rich landscapes of Fukuoka.
As the site is located within a Shinto shrine, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
