Guide
Mt. Kurikoma is a magnificent mountain area spanning the three prefectures of Miyagi, Akita, and Iwate. The area known as "Nagori-ga-hara" is particularly famous as a scenic spot featuring vast, rolling grasslands. It is a sanctuary for alpine plants, offering a landscape that transforms beautifully with each season. The mountain features a variety of well-maintained trails, ranging from challenging routes for serious mountaineers to more accessible paths for beginners.
This region has long been cherished as an environment where humans live in harmony with nature. At the foot of Mt. Kurikoma, various hot spring (onsen) facilities and lodging houses are scattered, serving as traditional resting spots for climbers and travelers throughout history. To preserve this precious ecosystem, the collection of local flora and fauna is strictly prohibited by law.

The greatest charm of Mt. Kurikoma lies in its dynamic topography and diverse vegetation. The expansive grasslands of Nagori-ga-hara and the sight of blooming alpine flowers never fail to captivate visitors. From near the summit, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountain ranges. The trails offer a mystical experience, featuring rocky terrain, grassy slopes, and the ethereal landscapes typical of high-altitude regions where mist often descends.
Mt. Kurikoma presents a completely different face depending on the season. From May to June, you may encounter patches of lingering snow, requiring specialized gear for a safe ascent. In summer, the mountain is adorned with a rich variety of alpine plants, while autumn brings vibrant foliage. Please note that during summer, sudden thunderstorms, rain, and heavy mist are common in the afternoons, so weather monitoring is essential. For autumn climbs, preparing warm clothing is indispensable due to the dropping temperatures.

The primary activities here are trekking and mountain climbing. You can challenge yourself with a serious ascent to the summit or enjoy a leisurely hike via beginner-friendly courses. A popular way to end your journey is by relaxing in a nearby hot spring (onsen) after your descent. There are also lodging facilities like "Heilzem Kurikoma" that allow for a more immersive, stay-based tourism experience.
The base of Mt. Kurikoma is home to the Sukawa Onsen area and various accommodations. These facilities are perfect for resting after a long hike. Additionally, nearby natural spots like Lake Sukawa allow visitors to combine their mountain climbing with peaceful nature walks.

Proper equipment is vital for a safe climb. We recommend sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, long-sleeved shirts, and carrying sufficient food and water. Please stick to the designated trails and do not wander off-course. It is a strict rule to carry all your trash back with you. Additionally, be aware that there have been sightings of bears in the area, so please remain vigilant.
