Kurihama Hana no Kuni is a vast urban park located in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Characterized by its lush greenery that utilizes the natural terrain, this botanical garden is beloved by many visitors for the diverse expressions of nature it shows throughout the seasons. The park features beautifully manicured gardens filled with colorful flowers, a fragrant herb garden, and dedicated play areas for children, making it an ideal spot to refresh both mind and body in a natural setting.
The land where the park now stands was once a site for U.S. military warehouses. After its return, the area was developed by Yokosuka City into the beautiful park it is today. It has become a major landmark in the Kurihama district, serving as a place where people can feel a close connection to nature through seasonal flower-picking events and various botanical experiences.

The greatest draw of the park is the massive-scale floral displays that change with the seasons. The spring season is particularly spectacular, with roughly 1 million poppies and nemophila flowers creating a sea of color that captivates every visitor. The herb garden offers a sensory experience where you can observe various plant species and enjoy their scents. Additionally, the park is a hit with families due to its fun play areas, including a popular Godzilla-themed slide that children absolutely love.
To make the most of your visit to Kurihama Hana no Kuni, timing is everything. The peak season is spring (around April to May), when the landscape is most vibrant with poppies and nemophila. In the autumn, vast fields of cosmos flowers bloom, signaling the arrival of the cooler season. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to see the colors of the flowers at their most vivid and to enjoy a pleasant stroll.
There is much more to do here than just walking through the gardens. Depending on the time of year, you can participate in special events, such as free poppy-picking festivals, allowing for a deeper connection with nature. The park also features an on-site restaurant where you can enjoy a meal surrounded by greenery. For children, the expansive playground provides a great space to run around and stay active, making it an enjoyable experience for all ages.
The area surrounding Kurihama Hana no Kuni captures the coastal and historical atmosphere characteristic of Yokosuka. You can easily incorporate nearby sites, such as Perry Park, into your sightseeing itinerary. Exploring the local food scene and enjoying walks through the scenic coastal landscape is highly recommended.
Because the park is quite large and features some undulating terrain, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and clothing. It is also wise to bring a hat for sun protection and plenty of water to stay hydrated.
