Kurashiki Ivy Square is a multifaceted cultural and tourism complex located in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. It is built upon the site of the former Kurashiki Spinning Mill, constructed in 1889 (Meiji 22), and is officially recognized as a National Industrial Heritage site. The most striking feature is the historic red brick architecture draped in lush green ivy, creating a beautiful fusion of historical atmosphere and modern comfort for guests seeking accommodation or dining.
The facility has a deep history rooted in the textile industry. Originally established as the first factory of the Kurashiki Spinning Mill in 1889, the site served various roles, including a wartime production facility, before being fully transformed into a tourism and cultural complex in 1973. The architecture preserves the structural styles that supported Japan's industrial modernization. In 2002, the site was honored with the Japan Institute of Architects 25th Anniversary Award (General Architecture category), highlighting its immense architectural and cultural value.
Visitors can explore various spots designed to connect with history and culture. The "Kurashiki Spinning Museum" offers a chronological look at the history of Japan's textile industry through authentic artifacts. The "Ivy Gakkan," a space renovated from a former cotton processing room, regularly hosts exhibitions and special events. The iconic red brick buildings, the seasonal changing colors of the ivy, and the serene courtyard-scapes are unique to this location. The guest rooms are housed in renovated warehouse structures, featuring a natural design that utilizes warm wood textures.
