Kunimi Kumashiro Historical and Cultural Park Nabeshima Residence, located in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a historic cultural park centered around the 'Former Nabeshima Family Residence,' which is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. The site preserves the structures of a former samurai residence, including buildings that retain the architectural style of the period, as well as traditional nagaya gates, storehouses, and stone walls. This site serves as a precious window into traditional Japanese architectural styles and the way of life during the samurai era. Following extensive preservation and repair work, the buildings on the premises are now open for interior tours.
This site is deeply connected to the history of the Kumashiro Nabeshima family, which was part of the Saga Domain. Many of the structures on the premises, such as the nagaya gates and storehouses, are designated as Important Cultural Properties, serving as symbols of the region's rich history. The 'Matsukabishi ni Tsuta' (Pine Skin Diamond with Ivy) crest carved into the onigawara (roof tiles) is the family emblem of the Kumashiro Nabeshima family, testifying to the high social status of this residence. The site plays a vital role in preserving and passing down local history to future generations.
The primary attraction is the interior tour of the 'Former Nabeshima Family Residence,' a designated Important Cultural Property. From inside the building, visitors can observe and appreciate the authentic architectural styles of the era. The grounds also feature impressive nagaya gates, historic storehouses, and beautiful stone walls. Other notable details include the retro lighting near the entrance, the views overlooking the garden, and the intricate designs such as the lattices adorned with the 'Matsukabishi' pattern. The park is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended, as it allows for a clear view of the intricate architectural details and the surrounding garden. The scenery of the Kumashiro Alley area changes with the seasons and the time of day. You can also use a local walking map to explore the surrounding historical streets alongside the residence. Please note that the facility is closed on Mondays (if Monday is a public holiday, it will close on the following day), so please check your schedule before visiting.
