Kunida-ke no Shibazakura is a highly renowned moss phlox viewing spot located in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture. What makes this site truly special is that it is a private residence where the flowers have been meticulously cultivated by the Kunida family. The tradition began around 1961 with Mrs. Kanae Kunida, who planted the first blooms, and has been lovingly maintained and passed down to her daughter and son-in-law, who have managed the garden for the past 20 years. Today, it is recognized as one of Gujo City's most iconic spots to enjoy the arrival of spring, offering a stunning tapestry of pink, white, and light purple flowers.
The history of these moss phlox dates back to 1961 (Showa 36). This breathtaking landscape is the result of decades of dedicated care by a single family. Rather than being a commercialized tourist attraction, it is a place where the deep affection for nature and a localized culture of stewardship are palpably felt. Visiting here allows you to witness a living piece of local history preserved through generations.
The primary attraction is the endless expanse of moss phlox (shibazakura) that blankets the ground. The undulating landscape of pink, white, and soft purple hues creates a mesmerizing view that captivates all who visit. During the peak season, the sheer density and vibrancy of the colors offer an unforgettable close-up encounter with the beauty of nature.
The ideal time to visit is around April. Visiting during this warm spring period ensures you see the flowers at their absolute peak of bloom. Because the colors and density of the flowers change depending on the exact week, we recommend checking local bloom reports to time your visit perfectly.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful moment observing the changing colors of the moss phlox amidst a serene natural setting. It is a perfect place for quiet contemplation and observing the subtle shifts in seasonal colors. You can truly feel the history of a family's devotion while enjoying the quintessential scenery of a Japanese spring.
Gujo City is home to many other wonderful sightseeing spots and rich natural landscapes. You can easily incorporate a visit to this beautiful moss phlox garden into a larger travel itinerary exploring the scenic highlights of Gifu Prefecture.
As you will be walking through a natural landscape, please wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for outdoor strolls. Most importantly, please remember that this is a private residence.
