Guide
The Kumano Kodo (Kobeyaji) is a significant route connecting Koyasan and Kumano Hongu Taisha in a north-south direction. Starting from Koyasan and passing through Nara Prefecture, Totsukawa Village, and finally into Wakayama Prefecture, this trail traverses the geological spine of the western Kii Mountains. It is renowned as the shortest distance between Koyasan and Kumano Hongu Taisha, and unlike other routes, it is characterized by a heavy emphasis on high-altitude wilderness trekking through untouched nature.
Historically, Kobeyaji served as a vital lifeline for local residents in the Kii Mountains, connecting the regions of Yamato, Koyasan, and Kumano. Since the early modern period, it has been utilized as a pilgrimage route for those traveling between Koyasan and Kumano. Historical records suggest that the area was also home to the Kijishi (woodworkers), illustrating how deeply daily life and spiritual practices were intertwined in this region. The presence of ancient ascetic sites and historical documents further highlights its long-standing importance as a mountain transportation route.

The Kobeyaji route offers spectacular natural landscapes of the Kii Mountain Range. The mountain passes, particularly around the Kenashi Pass (Kenashi-toge), provide breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. The route also features areas that evoke the feeling of ancient lifestyles and historical-era settlements. Rather than just a path for travel, the defining characteristic of this route is the constant change in topography and the immersive experience within the natural environment.
As this is a mountain trail, environmental changes are significant. Spring (March to May) and Autumn (October to November) are the most comfortable seasons to hike. However, please be aware that winter can bring snow and ice; it is essential to check local snow reports before departing. Additionally, because the trail moves through remote areas far from settlements, we strongly recommend planning your departure time carefully to ensure you complete your journey during daylight hours.

Kobeyaji offers a high-level trekking experience. The journey involves crossing several passes exceeding 1,000 meters in elevation between Koyasan and Kumano Hongu Taisha. This is more than a simple walk; it is a serious mountain trek that requires proper gear and physical preparation. Due to the long distances spent walking in nature, high physical fitness and specialized equipment are indispensable. A typical itinerary usually spans 3 days and 2 nights, or 4 days and 3 nights.
The route begins near the sacred Koyasan and ends near the Kumano Hongu Taisha area, passing through regions like Totsuyama and Totsukawa Village. These areas are rich in history and offer various accommodation options and local information. Some points along the route also intersect with other Kumano Kodo paths, such as the Nakahechi route.
Serious mountaineering preparation is required. Choose sturdy hiking boots suitable for steep terrain and wear clothing that can handle rapid weather changes. In winter, specialized gear for snow is mandatory. Since you will be far from settlements, ensure you carry sufficient food, water, and a first-aid kit. To preserve the environment, please follow local etiquette by carrying out all trash and respecting the local flora.
