The Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art is a premier comprehensive art museum located within the grounds of Kumamoto Castle Ninomaru Park. Designed by the renowned Japanese architect Kunio Maekawa, the building itself is a work of art, having received the Japan Institute of Architects 25th Anniversary Award in 2006. The museum consists of two main locations (the Main Building and the Annex) and boasts a balanced collection of Eastern and Western art, including ancient Japanese and Oriental art, modern and contemporary Japanese art, and Western fine arts. It is a sophisticated space where visitors can deeply experience the rich history and culture of Kumcia.
Established to preserve Kumamoto's cultural heritage and promote art education, the Main Building is a symbol of the "Modern Movement" and is recognized by DOCOMOMO JAPAN (an organization dedicated to the preservation of modern architecture). The museum also houses the "Hosokawa Collection Eisei Bunko Exhibition Room," which displays precious cultural assets passed down through the Hosokawa clan, the former lords of Kumamoto. The Annex, a former library, was redesigned by a Spanish architect using natural stones from Amakusa, creating a beautiful structure that harmonizes perfectly with the stone walls of Kumamoto Castle.
The primary draw is the diverse collection. In Western art, the museum holds works by Rodin (such as 'The Kiss'), as well as pieces by Picasso, Goya, Dürer, and a wide range of pop art prints. The Japanese collection includes paintings from the Yano and Kano schools that inherit the culture of the Kumamoto domain, alongside local ceramics and modern sculptures. On the 2nd floor of the Main Building, you can find the "Nishimitsu Collection" of precious ancient art and the dedicated Hosokawa Collection. Additionally, the 1st floor features the "Decorative Kofun Room," which offers insight into the diverse history of the Kumamoto region.
