Kumagaya Sakura Embankment is a scenic destination located along the Arakawa River in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture. A stretch of approximately 2km starting from the area near the Arakawa Bridge is lined with about 500 Yoshino cherry trees. In 1990, it was officially selected as one of the "Japan Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots," making it a landmark for celebrating the arrival of spring. The area is particularly famous for its breathtaking color palette, where the soft pink of the cherry blossoms meets the bright yellow of blooming rapeseed flowers (nanohana).
The history of this site dates back to the construction of the "Kumagaya Embankment" around 1580. While the original embankment was located near the current station, the site was later renovated and moved to its present location. Although the cherry trees faced a period of decline during the Meiji era, a dedicated planting movement starting in 1886 successfully revitalized the landscape. During the Taisho era, the area was so popular that special trains were even run from Ueno to accommodate visitors, showcasing a long history of being a beloved local landmark that continues to be cherished today.
