Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort is a comprehensive tourism complex located within Saikai National Park in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The facility brings together an aquarium, a sightseeing boat terminal, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Situated facing the southern Kujukushima islands of Saikai National Park, the resort offers a wide variety of leisure activities, centered around the 'Umi Kirara' aquarium, where you can observe a stunning array of marine life alongside beautiful coastal views.
The area is nestled in a nature-rich environment as part of Saikai National Park. The facility originally opened in 1994 as the 'Saikai Pearl Sea Resort.' On April 1, 2014, it was renamed to its current name, 'Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort.' Today, it is managed and operated by 'Sasebo Pearl Sea,' a third-sector organization under a designated manager system.
The resort is filled with diverse attractions. First, at the 'Umi Kirara' aquarium, you can observe approximately 16,000 marine creatures across 370 different species. The facility features 65 tanks containing everything from various fish to jellyfish and dolphins. For those looking to experience the sea, the 'Pearl Queen' sightseeing cruise takes you on a roughly 50-minute journey through the intricate topography of the Kujukushima islands, allowing you to see the landscape up close. Additionally, the marina offers active marine leisure such as yacht sailing and sea kayaking.
The facility is accessible year-round, though the experience varies by season. Please note that while the 'Umi Kirara' aquarium is generally open from 9:00 to 18:00, the closing time shifts to 17:00 during the winter period from November to February. Regarding the sightseeing cruises, operations may be canceled due to heavy rain or strong winds; it is highly recommended to check the weather and service status in advance. During the summer season, marine activities at the marina become particularly lively.
A wide range of sea-related experiences are available here. The sightseeing cruise is a signature activity to feel the natural beauty of Kujukushima. At the marina, you can enjoy time on the water through yacht sailing or sea kayaking. Inside the aquarium, there are educational corners, such as pearl harvesting demonstrations, to deepen your understanding of marine life. You can also purchase soft drinks, snacks, and various souvenirs at the on-site shops.
There are several other sightseeing spots related to Saikai National Park near the resort. Nearby attractions include the 'Mori Kirara' botanical garden and 'Tenkaipo,' which offers stunning panoramic views. These can be easily combined into a single sightseeing route. In terms of access, the resort is located approximately 7 minutes (about 4 km) by car from the Sasebo Chuo Interchange on the Saeseibu Expressway.
Here are some important notes for your visit. The 'Pearl Queen' sightseeing boat is barrier-free accessible, equipped with elevators and multi-purpose restrooms. Please note that all boats are strictly non-smoking. Regarding pets, they are only allowed on the 'Pearl Queen' if kept in a dedicated pet cage; pets are not permitted on the smaller sightseeing boats or other vessels. Wheelchairs and strollers are available for rent at the sightseeing boat ticket counter on a first-come, first-served basis (limited to 3 units). For payments, credit cards, mobile ID, WAON, and PayPay are accepted. Photography and video recording are permitted on all sightseeing boats.
