The Former Daijoin Garden is a designated National Scenic Spot located in Takahata-cho, Nara City. Once celebrated as one of the finest gardens in the Nanto region, it preserves the landscape-making techniques of the Muromachi period masters, Zen Ami and his son. Today, the site serves as the "Meisho Daijoin Garden Cultural Museum," where visitors can explore historical exhibits and enjoy the beautifully restored scenery.

History & Cultural Background

Daijoin was once a prestigious temple that flourished from the Heian to the Edo periods. Although the original structure was lost during the Nanto burning of 1180, the garden underwent significant renovations in the mid-15th century by the renowned landscape masters, the Zen Ami lineage. It remained one of the most beloved gardens in the region until the early Meiji era.

Following the anti-Buddhist movements of the Meiji Restoration, the temple fell into decline, but the site was designated as a National Scenic Spot in 1958. Since 1995, the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties has conducted extensive archaeological excavations. This led to a restoration project based on the "Daijoin Shiki Shinkei-zu" (Four Seasons Map of Daijoin) from the late Edo period, successfully reviving the lost ponds and topography of the original landscape.

Main Highlights

The centerpiece of the garden is the meticulously reconstructed pond-stroll landscape. The terrain is a sophisticated arrangement of the East and West ponds, a small hill, a central ridge, and the North Pond, which features a small waterfall and a central island.

At the onsite "Meisho Daijoin Garden Cultural Museum," you can view detailed models of the original Daijoin temple and various historical documents. The space, enclosed by earthen walls that replicate the original architecture, provides an authentic atmosphere of a bygone era.

Seasonal Beauty

The garden offers changing scenery throughout the year. Notably, from early July to August, visitors can enjoy the sight of large Crape Myrtle (Sarusuberi) trees in full pink bloom.

Inside the cultural museum, you can learn about the history and structure of the former Daijoin through various exhibits. For a more immersive experience, the tea room is available for use, allowing you to enjoy traditional Japanese tea culture while gazing out at the tranquil garden.

The garden is located near other significant historical sites in Nara, such as the historic Nara Hotel, the World Heritage site Goko-ji (Motoji-ji), and the Nara National Museum. These can be easily combined into a comprehensive cultural itinerary.
