The Koya Ryujin Skyline is a high-altitude ridge road connecting Koya-cho to Ryujin Village in Wakayama Prefecture. The route winds through the mountainous terrain of the Kii Peninsula, passing through Goma-danzan on the way to Ryujin Onsen. With its rhythmic ups, downs, and curves, it is a highly popular destination for both driving enthusiasts and motorcycle touring travelers seeking adventure.
This road was once operated as a toll road, but since becoming free to use in 2003, it has served as a vital scenic artery for the region. It is now part of National Route 371. The area surrounding Goma-danzan is characterized by a pristine natural environment, featuring lush forests dominated by beech trees, which adds a sense of ancient tranquility to the journey.
As you drive, you will encounter numerous scenic viewpoints offering sweeping views of the Kii Peninsula mountains. The area around Goma-danzan is particularly striking, where you can observe the natural color gradients of the landscape as the elevation changes. A major highlight is the 'Michi-no-Eki Tanabe City Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower.' This 33-meter tall observation tower is shaped like a stack of ritual wooden prayer sticks (gomagi) and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding wilderness.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. The autumn foliage season is especially famous, as the entire mountainside turns a brilliant golden hue, attracting many photographers and sightseers. However, please note that during the winter season (mid-December to late March), certain sections may be restricted for motorcycles. If you are traveling by bike, it is essential to check the local status before your trip. Spring, summer, and autumn offer diverse natural landscapes visible directly from your vehicle.
This area is tailor-made for exploring nature through driving and touring. The undulating terrain provides an engaging experience for drivers and riders alike, allowing you to truly feel the topography of the mountain range. The route is well-equipped with various rest areas and observation points, making it easy to stop and soak in the scenery.
At the end of the route, you can find Ryujin Onsen, where you can unwind in natural hot springs after your drive. Other nearby natural attractions include the Goma-danzan Forest Park Wildlife area and the scenic Yukawa Valley. The Michi-no-Eki Tanabe City Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower serves as a crucial rest stop located near the midpoint of the route.
Because this is a mountainous area, weather conditions can change rapidly. Please prepare for sudden shifts in temperature or rain. For motorcyclists, be aware that access may be restricted during the winter period (mid-December to late March). As this is a precious natural environment, please practice eco-friendly behavior. When using parking lots or observation facilities, please ensure you stay within the designated areas to protect the local flora and fauna.
