Kouri Bridge is a stunning 1,960m-long bridge connecting the Motobu Peninsula (Nago City and Nakijin Village) to Kouri Island in northern Okinawa. Opened on February 8, 2005, it is celebrated as the second longest free bridge in Okinawa Prefecture. As you drive across, the emerald green ocean stretches out on both sides, creating the sensation of gliding directly over the sea.
The bridge construction began in 1997 and was completed in 2005. Upon its opening, it drew significant attention as a major free-access bridge connecting the mainland to the island. The bridge also holds deep cultural significance; the design of the bridge's pillars reflects local legends of human origins. The pillars feature a "Male" and "Female" design: the Male pillar is characterized by a strong, upright silhouette, while the Female pillar features a gentler, more embracing shape. At night, these pillars are illuminated by LED lights, adding a mystical atmosphere to the landscape.
The primary attraction is the seamless view of the transparent turquoise sea and the vast blue sky. On clear days, the water shifts into a vibrant emerald green, providing a constantly changing scenery during your drive. The symbolic pillars at the entrance of the bridge are also a must-see for those interested in the local cultural heritage. At night, the green LED lighting on the Male pillar creates a completely different, mysterious expression compared to the daytime.
Daytime is the best time for driving, as the sunlight makes the ocean colors appear most vivid and brilliant. During the evening, you can witness the changing colors of the sky and the shifting reflections on the water's surface. If you choose to drive at night, you can enjoy the illuminated pillars. Please note that for safety, the bridge may be subject to traffic restrictions if wind speeds exceed 20m/s.
Crossing Kouri Bridge is the essential way to access Kouri Island. Once you reach the island, you can enjoy visiting Kouri Beach or the Kouri Fureai Hiroba (community plaza) to enjoy local specialties. Since this is a driving-based destination, it is common to drive with the windows down to fully immerse yourself in the ocean breeze and scenery.
The Motobu Peninsula lies to the south of the bridge, while Kouri Island lies to the north. The island itself is dotted with beautiful beaches and facilities where you can experience local food culture. For travelers, free parking areas (such as the Kouri Bridge South Lookout) are available to make your visit smooth and convenient.
Crossing the bridge is free of charge. However, when using nearby facilities such as local shops, restaurants, or parking areas, please note that cash or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc.) are typically accepted.
While some signage at nearby tourist facilities or beaches may be in English, most local services and staff communication are primarily in Japanese.
No prior reservation is required to cross the bridge. Parking spaces are generally available on a first-come, first-served basis.
As you will be driving and likely visiting beaches, we recommend bringing sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water to protect against the strong sun. If you plan to swim or visit the beach, bringing a change of clothes is highly recommended.
Photography is permitted, but for your safety, please do not operate your vehicle or distract the driver while taking photos. Always pull over to a safe, designated area to capture the view.
Some parking areas feature designated spaces for people with disabilities. While the bridge area is paved, please check local conditions for specific terrain or steps.
If wind speeds exceed 20m/s, the bridge may be closed to traffic for safety reasons. Please follow all local traffic instructions and signs.
