The Kottaro Wetland Observatory is a stunning natural lookout located within the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park. Situated along Prefectural Road 1060, the area offers a view of the winding Kushiro River. Once you climb the stairs to the elevated observatory, a vast, unobstructed landscape of the wetlands unfolds before your eyes. This location provides a high-angle perspective of the primitive, untouched scenery that nature has meticulously crafted.
This area is part of the Kushiro Wetland, one of Japan's largest wetlands, and is part of a precious natural environment designated as a special protection zone within the National Park. The area surrounding the Kottaro Wetland is renowned for its deep, untouched natural state. For many years, it has served as a vital habitat for diverse wildlife, maintaining a history of rigorous nature conservation and landscape preservation.

From the observatory, you can enjoy a grand panorama of the wetlands. Using the available binoculars/telescopes, you can spot distant wildlife, such as the iconic Red-crowned Cranes (Tancho). You may also encounter Ezo deer and other wildlife in the vicinity. The changing expressions of the wetlands through the seasons and the elegant curves of the winding river are the primary draws of this location.
The landscape transforms beautifully with each season. From spring to summer, the wetlands are covered in lush greenery, while autumn brings a stunning display of changing foliage colors. In winter, the area is blanketed in a serene, white snowscape. Regarding the time of day, the colors of the wetland change depending on the angle of the sunlight, so visiting during bright daylight hours is recommended for the clearest and most vibrant views.

The primary activity here is enjoying the view from the elevated platform. The path to the observatory is part of a scenic driving route surrounded by nature, where you might even spot Ezo deer or wild birds while traveling. Visitors typically spend their time observing birds through telescopes or simply soaking in the immense, peaceful landscape of the wetlands.
Route 1060, which leads to the observatory, is a scenic drive characterized by the meandering paths of the Kushiro River. The entire surrounding area is part of the Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, making the drive itself a wonderful way to experience the changing natural environment.
