Kotonoma Hachimangu is a historic shrine located in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It enshrines the deity Kotonomachihi-me-no-mikoto, who is believed to govern the power of "Kotodama" (the spirit of words). As the name suggests, it is a sacred place where it is believed that wishes expressed through words can be realized, attracting many visitors seeking spiritual connection. The shrine grounds are dominated by awe-inspiring natural monuments, including a Great Cedar reaching approximately 36m in height and a majestic Camphor tree standing at about 31m, allowing visitors to feel the raw power of nature.
This shrine holds the prestigious status of being the Ichinomiya (the first shrine) of the ancient Totomi Province. Its history is deeply rooted in Japanese tradition; it is said that the shrine's name is even mentioned in the classical literature 'The Pillow Book' by Sei Shonagon during the Heian period. Historically, travelers traversing the Tokaido road would stop here to pray for safe passage. This deep-rooted culture of valuing the weight of words continues today, as the tradition of sending one's heartfelt wishes to the gods through spoken or silent prayer remains a vital part of the shrine's spiritual identity.
The most striking features of the shrine are the massive ancient trees. Beside the worship hall stands the Great Cedar, a legendary sacred tree approximately 36m tall, said to have been planted by the famous general Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. The 31m-tall Camphor tree is also a protected natural monument of Kakegawa City. Walking through the grounds, you are enveloped in a sacred atmosphere and can feel the vibrant life force of the forest. Another unique cultural highlight is the ritual of "polishing the white stones" near the main shrine, a tradition unique to this sacred site.
While the shrine grounds are accessible 24 hours a day, please note that official services such as receiving Goshuin (stamps), amulets (Omamori), or requesting formal Shinto prayers (Gokito) are only available during daytime hours (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM). The shrine is beautiful throughout the year, but the season of fresh greenery is particularly stunning, as the vitality of the Great Cedar and Camphor trees is at its peak. For a peaceful stroll and a sense of tranquility, visiting during the bright daylight hours is highly recommended.
A special spiritual experience at Kotonoma Hachimangu is the ritual of "receiving blessings." It is said that by selecting three white stones near the small shrine of the main hall and polishing them with your heart, you can receive blessings for yourself and others. To participate, you should first obtain a piece of white paper at the shrine office. In this sacred space dedicated to the power of words, taking the time to organize your thoughts and prayers into clear, heartfelt intentions is a precious way to find inner peace.
The surrounding Kakegawa area offers various spots to enjoy local history and nature.
