Hiroto-en is a celebrated destination for viewing wisteria, located in Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture. The garden's history dates back to the Bunsei era (around 1820), starting with wisteria trellises crafted from wood and bamboo. Today, it is affectionately known as "Hirono Nagafuji" (Hirono Long Wisteria). As you walk through the grounds, you will be greeted by cascading clusters of flowers that create a truly spectacular landscape.
The history of this site reaches back to the Bunsei era. It is said that a lover of wisteria originally constructed the trellises using wood and bamboo, a tradition that has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations. Because of this deep historical significance, the wisteria structures are currently designated as a natural monument of Hekinan City. These historic trellises continue to showcase their breathtaking beauty to this day.
The greatest draw is the sight of the wisteria flowers blooming in unison. The exceptionally long flower clusters (Nagafuji) are a masterpiece of nature, captivating visitors with their sheer scale and elegance. During the annual Wisteria Festival, the garden features a spectacular nighttime illumination. This allows visitors to enjoy two distinct experiences: the refreshing, bright scenery under the daytime sun, and the mystical, ethereal atmosphere created by the lights at night.
The peak blooming season is typically from mid-April to early May. The "Wisteria Festival" is held during this period to celebrate the blossoms. We recommend visiting during the daytime to appreciate the vibrant colors of the flowers under natural light, or in the evening to experience the magical atmosphere created by traditional lantern-style lighting. Be sure to experience the different expressions of the wisteria at both day and night.
