Kotodai Koen is an urban park located in Honmachi, Aoba Ward, in the heart of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Despite being in the center of the city, you can enjoy a beautiful landscape where nature and culture blend seamlessly. The most distinctive feature of this park is its location between two natural terraces: the Sendai Kamimachi Terrace and the Sendai Nakamachi Terrace. This elevation change creates a dynamic and rich landscape within the park. It serves as a vital community space for relaxation, strolls, and various local events.
The park's layout is defined by its unique topographical features. While the area was once surrounded by Himalayan Cedars, the landscape has evolved into an open, welcoming space facing Kotodai-dori. The park is also a cultural space, featuring various sculptures throughout its grounds. For example, on the Nakamachi Terrace side, you can find works such as the "Kiyoshi Shiga Statue," "Tanikaze," "Ki no Mori," and "Nozomi," adding an artistic touch to your walk. Additionally, the scenery is characterized by the presence of water, including a waterfall fountain and the restored waterway of the Yotsuya Canal, which highlights the natural flow of the terrain.
The park is divided into several distinct areas. The Citizen's Plaza, the Stage, and the Circular Plaza are popular spots known for their sense of openness. The stage area is designed to be accessible to everyone, featuring ramps for wheelchair users. Exploring the various sculptures is a must-do activity. As you walk through the different levels of the terraces, you can experience the changing atmosphere and artistic expressions unique to each elevation. Furthermore, the park serves a multi-functional role in urban safety, with certain areas designed to function as a helipad during emergencies.
As Kotodai Koen is open 24 hours a day, it offers different moods depending on the time of day. During the daytime, it is highly recommended to enjoy a stroll under the sunlight amidst the lush greenery. The views of the plants and waterways nestled within the terrace steps are particularly peaceful. While the park remains open at night, you can enjoy a quiet moment in the city surrounded by the soft glow of streetlights. Kotodai Koen boasts excellent access to major transportation in Sendai. It is directly connected to the Sendai City Subway Namboku Line via Kotodai-koen Station. You can access the park immediately from Exit 1 or Exit 2. For those arriving by car or bicycle, there are underground parking lots and bicycle parking areas nearby. Since the park is located in a central urban area, you will find plenty of restaurants and shops in the vicinity, making it a very convenient stop during your sightseeing tour.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the park features various stairs and slopes due to its terraced topography. Regarding payments, if you use the nearby underground parking or bicycle parking, cash, credit cards, or transit IC cards are generally accepted. Please note that underground parking is a paid service. While English signage may be limited, having a map or route pre-checked will make your visit smoother. As this is a public space, please remember to take your trash home and respect the local etiquette to ensure a pleasant environment for everyone.
