The Koshu Kaido Ginkgo Avenue (Route 20), located in Hachioji, Tokyo, is a spectacular tree-lined avenue featuring approximately 700 ginkgo trees stretching over 4km. As autumn deepens, the leaves turn a brilliant, vivid gold, creating a breathtaking golden tunnel that arches over the road. This iconic scenery is a celebrated symbol of the changing seasons in the region.
This avenue follows the path of the Koshu Kaido, one of the five major highways established during the Edo period. Many of the ginkgo trees that make up this landscape have a deep history, with many being planted in connection to the construction of the Tama Imperial Mausoleum in 1929. Over the decades, these trees have become a vital part of the local landscape and a major attraction for autumn foliage enthusiasts.
The primary attraction is the continuous 4km stretch of golden ginkgo trees. From mid-November to early December, the leaves reach their peak color, forming a dense golden canopy. On clear days, sunlight reflects off the bright yellow leaves, illuminating the ground which becomes covered in a lush, yellow carpet of fallen leaves. Occasionally, light-up events are held at night, offering a completely different and magical atmosphere compared to the daytime.
The best time to visit is from mid-November to early December when the ginkgo leaves are at their most vibrant. Visiting during the daytime on a sunny day is highly recommended, as the sunlight enhances the brilliance of the gold and creates an ideal environment for walking or cycling. If light-up events are scheduled, the illuminated golden trees provide a stunning sight against the night sky.
The avenue is a popular route for walking, cycling, and scenic driving. The mild autumn weather makes it a perfect setting for a relaxing stroll or a bike ride while enjoying the golden views. During the peak foliage season, local events may take place nearby, sometimes featuring food stalls or musical performances, adding to the seasonal charm.
The location is relatively easy to access from central Tokyo, making it an excellent destination for a day trip. The surrounding area offers various spots to experience nature and local culture, characterized by the beautiful shifts in scenery throughout the four seasons.
As this is an outdoor location, please dress appropriately for the season. During the autumn foliage peak, temperatures can drop significantly, so it is wise to bring a warm jacket. Please note that this area is a public road (National Route 20); always stay alert to traffic when walking or cycling. When taking photographs, please ensure you do not obstruct the flow of pedestrians or vehicles.
